Stanley Garfield Bumbrey was born in Fredericksburg, VA on September 18, 1948. He departed this life on September 17, 2025 peacefully in Chesterfield, VA.
Upon marrying Linda Christine Johnson in 1972, he made King George County, VA his permanent home. He was affectionately called “Stan,” “Stanback,” “Gar,” “Da” and “Poppa” by family and friends.
He received his childhood education in Fredericksburg Public Schools. In 1971, he graduated from St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, VA with a degree in Education. He went on to teach in Fredericksburg, Petersburg and at Childhelp in Culpeper, VA until the age of 72. In 1986, he obtained his MBA from University of Virginia. He served as Principal at Childhelp on multiple occasions as needed, but was always drawn back to the classroom as soon as possible.
Stanley’s number one passion was his family and friends. Extra time was built in for all trips to Fredericksburg because there was someone he knew everywhere he went. He loved driving which was his most missed activity in his later years. He enjoyed singing, especially as a member of the Men’s Choir at Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site) where he was a long-term member. As his memories faded, he still managed to know family members and friends and lyrics to Motown songs. He anxiously awaited football season every year to watch his beloved Washington Commanders.
Stanley leaves to cherish his memory: his daughter, Leslie B. Weldon; his son, Clifton A. Bumbrey (Renae Peyton); his grandchildren: Adrienne Franks (Andrew), Candice N. Bumbrey, A. Justin Weldon, Trevor S. Bumbrey, Breona M. Bumbrey, Day’von X. Bumbrey; Aaliyah Peyton Bumbrey, Jayla Blomberg, A’munique C. Bumbrey, Que’Monie Jones-Johnson, Zariya Bumbrey, and Clifton “CJ” A. Bumbrey, Jr; his great grandchildren: A. Jaylin Franks, Jayda Wright, Aubrielle C. Franks, Layla N. Weldon, A. Joel Franks, Kaiden Gordon; his sister, Cordella M. Anderson and his brothers, David McMillan (Anita) and Rodney Singleton (Trice); his brothers-in-law: Ret. Sgt. Major Van P. Johnson (Chris) and Don L. Johnson (Michelle), and his sister-in-law, Robin Y. Johnson; his uncle: Joseph Bumbrey (Frances); his former son-in- law: Billy Weldon (Chris Cleveland); nieces, nephews, cousins (several of whom were like siblings to him who grew up in Mayfield together) and other extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda J. Bumbrey; his son: Michael A. Bumbrey; his parents: Mable B. McMillan & Hubert O. McMillan, Sr; his in-laws Anna M. Johnson & Moses A. Johnson; his brother Hubert O. McMillan, Jr; and his sister-in-law Blanche “Ginny” Allen.
