Rev. Kevin DeWitt McDowney

Kevin Dewitt McDowney, born on April 23, 1963, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was the son of the late James Henry and Daisy Mae (Curry) McDowney. He was the ninth of twelve siblings. Kevin completed his primary and middle school education in the King George County Public School System. At the tender age of 16 he began his military career and graduated high school in Augsburg, Germany, while serving in the United States Army.

God peacefully transitioned Kevin from labor to eternal rest on July 23, 2025, at his residence in King George, VA following a brief illness.

At an early age, he was baptized and became a member of the Good Hope Baptist Church in King George, Virginia, under Reverend Ralph E. Cabell's leadership. Kevin’s ministry began early, serving in junior ministries, then as an adult church schoolteacher, cemetery committee

member, men’s club and chorus participant, despite his inability to carry a tune in a bucket. He enjoyed lifting his voice to the Lord. Kevin served on the Deacon’s ministry before being ordained as a Minister in 1995 by Reverend Ronald E. Dunaway. In 1998, he was called to pastor the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Orange, VA, serving until his deployment to Iraq with the military in 2005. Kevin retired after more than 30 years in the U.S. Army and often spoke of his battle buddies in the 80th Division Training Command. Additionally, he worked as a land surveyor supervisor with the Virginia Department of Transportation in Fredericksburg, VA, and retired from that position.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, James and Daisy McDowney; his paternal grandparents, Earnest and Mary McDowney; his maternal grandparents, Robert and Daisy Curry; siblings, Daisy E. McDowney, Elijah E. McDowney, Melvin T. McDowney, Virginia L. Hubbard, and Darlene B. McDowney; niece, Daisy L. McDowney; nephews, Robert L. McDowney, Mark L. McDowney and Diondrae Shade; aunts, Lillian Peyton, Viola McDowney, Pinkie Evereda Taylor, Willette Green, and Leona Young; as well as uncles, Andrew McDowney and Stanley McDowney.

Kevin cherished his family, fondly calling his adult sons and grandchildren "baby." He will be remembered as a kind, hardworking man with a corny sense of humor and a man who loved God and was grateful for his daily blessings.

Kevin is survived by his sons, Steven D. McDowney and Anthony D. McDowney; their mother, Dorothy “Dottie” McDowney; loving grandchildren, Zyair Foster and Daisy E. McDowney; as well as his siblings, John H. McDowney, Mark P. McDowney, Earsley J. Robinson (Reginald), Parithia N. McDowney, Sandra R. Redd (Tony), and Kenneth M. McDowney (Patricia). He is also remembered by his uncles, Earnest (Webster) McDowney and Veola (Jimmy) McDowney; aunts, Tameenah Ardis Dubose and Emma Johnson; and a large extended family including nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
