Rev. Darrell W. Upson was 64, of King George County. He peacefully drifted away to be with the Lord at his residence; Tuesday, August 18, 2015. Darrell was a loving, kind and free soul who stood firm in his faith in God, he loved being with his family. He is survived by his wife; the love of his life; Rev. Doris D. Upson in 42 years of dedication, love and oneness of the soul, 5 daughters; Janice (deceased), Doris, Tonya, Denise and Tiffany; three sons, Tony, Ricardo and Marcus. He has 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 11 god children and a father figure and helped raised many more.
Darrell was born March 31, 1951 in Lott, Texas. He was the son of the late Alvin Upson and Bllie Thompson; two sisters, Janet Allum and Tracey Thompson(deceased). He graduated from Lott High School; he received several atletic awards, he played football and was a candidate for pro-football and he was chosen All District player of the year. His strong desire was to be a Marine 100% and more. As a Marine he demanded respect, obedience and courage. He served for 30 years. Retired October 1999 as Master Gunnery Sgt. with several decorations and awards: Good conduct medal w/8, National Defense medal w/1, Vietnam Service medal, Marine Corps recruiting ribbon w/4, Meritorious Unit Commendation w/3, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal w/3, Navy unit commendation, Sea Service deployment, Character of Honorable Service, Desert Storm, Gulf War, 0369 Infantry and Scout Sniper school. After Kuwait War he decided to pursue a career in recruiting. Later he attended Champman College, Northern Virginia Community College, graduated from Strayer University with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Information Systems, graduated from Andersonville Theological Seminary and ordained December 1, 2012. He was a member of Free Masonry of King George Lodge #314 (Worship Past Master) and the Worshipful Grand Assistant Chaplain of the Grand Lodge.
Rev. Upson was a member of Antioch Baptist Church; Rev. Larry Finch, Sr., Pastor. He worked faithfully in several organizations. He was a member of American Legion Post #329. He worked as Building Manager for Navy Gateway Inns and Suite Dahlgren, Virginia and H&R Block until his illness no longer allowed him at work at his occupations.
Last but not least, he was a passionate and avid DALLAS COWBOYS FAN!
